Review by Mixmaster Linc
Andy Watts and Blues on Fire are an Israeli blues band, based out of Tel Aviv. Their 2020 release, Supergroove was co-produced by Kenny Neal and features special guests Joe Louis Walker and Eliza Neals, plus singers Roy Young, and Israelis Danny Shoshan and Gadi Altman. Half of the songs are Andy Watts originals, while the covers include classics, as well as compositions by Joe Louis Walker and Coastin’ Hank.
Recorded by Matan Ashkenazy at Ozen Muzikalit in Ma’abarot – a kibbutz in central Israel, the lineup includes Eyal Klein and Matan Mochiach on keyboards, Ioram Linker on sax, Gregory Rivkin on trumpet, Moran Bar-On on trombone, Ilan Hillel and Tom Mochiach on bass and Tom Bollig on drums with Coastin Hank sitting for two tunes on harmonica.
The genre for the songs is 90% blues, with a little blues/rock mixed in, and the band is extremely tight, with Watts’ guitar work shining throughout. His cover of the Peter Green / Bluesbreakers tune “The Supernatural” is a fitting tribute to Andy’s boyhood guitar hero.
In total, I give the album 4.5 out of 5 stars, well worth the listen.
